The Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) is pleased to announce the inaugural webinar of the FP/SRHR Thematic Panel, taking place on August 30, 2023, from 15:00–16:00 GMT.

This first session will spotlight pioneering research on “Perceived Norms, Personal Agency, and Postpartum Family Planning Intentions Among First-Time Mothers Aged 15–24 Years in Kinshasa.” The study sheds light on how young mothers navigate reproductive decisions in the postpartum period, offering fresh insights to guide more effective and culturally sensitive reproductive health programming in sub-Saharan Africa.

Why This Matters

Young motherhood in Africa brings unique challenges shaped by cultural norms, personal aspirations, and health system realities. This study examines two powerful influences:

  • Perceived norms: what young women believe their families and communities expect of them.
  • Personal agency: their ability to make autonomous choices about family planning.

Findings from Kinshasa provide critical evidence for designing interventions that address not only access to services but also the social and psychological barriers that shape reproductive choices.

Expert Leadership

The webinar will be chaired by Professor Akanni Ibukun Akinyemi (Obafemi Awolowo University), with Dr. Estelle Monique Sidze as Vice Chair. The featured speaker, Professor Anastasia J. Gage (Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine), brings decades of expertise in reproductive health and social determinants of health in sub-Saharan Africa.

A Collaborative Launch

This inaugural FP/SRHR Thematic Panel webinar reflects the strong collaboration between UAPS/UEPA and the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP). By bringing together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, the panel creates a platform to ensure that evidence is translated into practice and policy.
