Coming from eleven countries across Africa, meet the 2nd cohort of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) advancing research on FP/SRHR and gender in Africa.
The Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) is delighted to announce our 20 outstanding Early Career Researchers selected for the second cohort of the AfRes-Data Fellowship Programme. Chosen from over 150 applications in 2023, these fellows represent 11 countries across four regions of Africa: Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Togo, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia.
About AfRes-Data ECR Fellowship
The African Research and Data Use Capacity Building (AfRes-Data) Programme equips the next generation of African population scientists to address the continent’s pressing population and development issues. The program focuses on:
- Capacity development for recent PhD graduates and PhD candidates.
- Creating platforms for data use, dissemination, and networking.
- Strengthening UAPS to serve as the leading hub for African population research.
Fellows will receive advanced training, opportunities to showcase research at high-profile platforms such as the African Population Conference and in peer-reviewed journals, and mentorship to grow as independent scholars and policy influencers.
What Awaits the Fellows
This new cohort will engage in a blend of in-person and virtual workshops, followed by a six-month mentorship program. They will gain research skills, expand professional networks, and foster collaborations that extend beyond the fellowship.
Their research interests cover a wide range of timely and impactful issues, including:
- Female genital schistosomiasis and women’s health.
- Sexuality and gynaecological healthcare.
- The effects of climate change and food security.
- Mobile technologies for FP/SRHR among majority and minority populations.
Together, they join the first cohort of 17 fellows, expanding a vibrant community of early career researchers committed to advancing Africa’s development through evidence-based research.
Looking Ahead
UAPS remains committed to nurturing African scholars across Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone regions and providing them platforms to share their work globally.
