The Union for African Population Studies announces the establishment of its Data and AI Scientific Thematic Panel.
As Africa’s demographic landscape continues to evolve rapidly, the intersection of artificial intelligence, data science, and population research presents unprecedented opportunities to strengthen our understanding and responses to critical development challenges.
Panel Mission:
The panel brings together experts from academia, National Statistics Offices, civil society, and the tech sector to:
- Explore AI applications in census operations, surveys, and administrative data systems
- Share cutting-edge methodologies in machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and geospatial analysis for demographic research
- Evaluate opportunities and risks of AI adoption in official statistics
- Develop ethical and technical guidelines for responsible, transparent AI use
- Build capacity and foster innovation networks across the continent
Why This Matters:
From improving data collection efficiency to enabling real-time demographic insights, from addressing data gaps through innovative computational techniques to ensuring fairness and community trust, this panel will help shape how Africa leverages AI for better population data systems.
We’re committed to developing locally relevant solutions that respect data sovereignty, promote transparency, and build on Africa’s unique strengths and contexts.
We invite all members and partners to engage with this initiative.
Together, let us ensure that the AI revolution in demographic research serves Africa’s development priorities and strengthens our collective capacity to make evidence-based decisions.
