Prof Winfred Avogo

African Diaspora Fellow, having held fellowships at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. He earned an MSc in Population Sciences from the Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS) at the University of Ghana and a PhD in Sociology from Arizona State University. Prof. Avogo’s research focuses on the intersection of demographic change, environmental dynamics, and public health, with a particular emphasis on Sub-Saharan Africa. His work has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals and spans a diverse set of topics, including the diffusion of innovations, social networks and fertility behavior, sexual and reproductive health, the social aspects of HIV/AIDS, forced migration and child mortality, and the epidemiology of chronic diseases.

With over sixteen years of experience in teaching and mentorship, Prof. Avogo has taught a wide range of courses, including Demography, Population and Environmental Dynamics, Research Methods, Social Statistics, Senior Capstone, and Social Problems. He has also supervised numerous graduate theses and dissertations, contributing significantly to the development of emerging scholars in the field. He previously served on the editorial board of African Population Studies and chaired the Planning and Finance Committee of the Academic Senate at ISU. Prof. Avogo is an active member of several professional associations, including the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), the Population Association of America (PAA), and the Union for African Population Studies (UAPS).
